Kitchen Granite Slabs vs Granite Chippings: Order the Right Material
A kitchen countertop and a truckload of construction aggregate can both be described as “granite”. They are ordered, priced and used very differently. Before asking a supplier for a price, explain whether you need a finished stone surface or crushed stone for building work.
Granite slabs and chippings compared
| Buying detail | Kitchen granite slab | Granite chippings |
|---|---|---|
| Form | A large stone slab, cut and finished to a measured design | Loose crushed stone particles supplied to a specified size or grading |
| Typical use | Kitchen worktops, islands, vanity tops and selected wall finishes | Coarse aggregate for specified concrete mixes and other designed construction applications |
| Key specification | Stone selection, dimensions, thickness, finish, edges, joints and cutouts | Particle size, grading, cleanliness, source and required quantity |
| Quantity basis | Slab or measured area; confirm fabrication and installation separately | Tonnes per load; confirm the weight record and delivery terms |
| Delivery planning | Handling, lifting, breakage protection and installation access | Truck type, approach road, gate clearance and safe tipping space |
What is kitchen granite?
Kitchen granite usually means a stone slab that a fabricator measures, cuts and finishes for a worktop. The finished surface may include sink and hob openings, shaped edges, joints, splashbacks and an island overhang. Its suitability depends on the selected stone and the installation design, not simply the word “granite”.
Choose the actual slab where possible: colour, veining and surface appearance can vary. A small sample is useful, but it may not show the full pattern or the position of a joint on your finished counter.
Questions for your stone fabricator
- Which stone and finish are included, and can I inspect the slab before cutting?
- What thickness and support are proposed for the cabinets, openings and overhangs?
- Does the quote include measuring, cutouts, edge finishing, transport, fitting and any lifting?
- Where will the joints sit, and how will the sink and hob be supported?
- What cleaning and sealing instructions apply to this particular stone?
Do not assume that every granite worktop needs the same sealing schedule. The Natural Stone Institute’s countertop guidance explains that sealing needs vary. Ask your fabricator for care instructions appropriate to the stone and any treatment already applied.
What are granite chippings?
Granite chippings are crushed stone particles rather than a finished decorative surface. They are commonly used as coarse aggregate in concrete, alongside fine aggregate, cement and water. Aggregate size, grading and other properties influence how a concrete mix behaves; the American Concrete Institute’s aggregate overview explains their role.
For a reinforced slab, beam, column or foundation, order the aggregate specified by the project engineer or approved mix design. A familiar market name or a lower price is not a substitute for the required grading and quality checks.

Specify the size, not just “granite”
Pamitadz’s granite guide lists ⅜-inch, ½-inch, ⅝-inch, ¾-inch and 1-inch chippings. In the local trade, ⅝-inch granite is commonly called “¾-inch down”. Confirm that exact product when using the nickname; it should not be confused with separately listed ¾-inch chippings. For engineered work, confirm the required grading as well as the nominal size.
Read the granite sizes and delivery guide before booking. Larger or smaller particles are not automatically better: the appropriate choice depends on the design, placement method and project specification.
Chippings, stone dust, stonebase and hardcore are different orders
These products may come from related sources, but they are not interchangeable. Stone dust is a fine crushed material. Stonebase is a graded mixture used for specified base work. Hardcore refers to coarse material supplied for suitable filling or sub-base applications. Confirm the composition, grading and intended use with your supplier and project professional before substituting any of them for chippings.
How to order construction granite in Lagos
A useful quote request states the material specification, quantity and exact delivery point. “How much is granite?” leaves out the details that determine the load and transport cost.
- Name the product and size. State chippings, stone dust, stonebase or hardcore, and include the engineer’s specification where applicable.
- Confirm tonnes per load. Distinguish 20, 25, 26 and 30 tonnes. Do not use a truck’s appearance as proof of its contents.
- Choose a suitable truck. The price guide shows one standard rate for 20-tonne loads. For larger listed loads, compare Howo and Trailer options and confirm which can reach your site.
- Give the full site location. Include the street, estate or gate, landmark and access restrictions, with a map pin if helpful. Flag narrow roads, weak ground, low cables and limited turning or tipping space.
- Check what the quote includes. Confirm delivery, any route or access charges, offloading arrangements and the agreed timing before booking.
- Request delivery records. Ask for the weighbridge ticket for a load sold by weight, plus the invoice and delivery note. Compare the ticket’s recorded net weight with your agreed quantity.
Pamitadz supplies aggregate orders of 20 tonnes and above directly from quarry partners; smaller orders come from our pile-down stock. Confirm the source and the documentation available for your particular order. A weighbridge ticket records weight; it does not certify grading or suitability. Standard laboratory grading reports from Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory are available for bulk orders only.
Common questions
Can granite chippings be used as a kitchen worktop?
Loose chippings are not a finished stone countertop. If you want a granite worktop, speak to a stone fabricator about a suitable slab, measurement, cutting and installation.
Are kitchen granite and construction granite priced the same way?
No. A worktop quote depends on the stone, measured area and fabrication or fitting work. A chippings quote depends on the aggregate specification, tonnes, truck and delivery location. Compare quotes on the same basis.
Does “30 tonnes” mean every large truck carries exactly that amount?
No. Confirm the agreed quantity and inspect the recorded net weight on the weighbridge ticket. The gross weight includes the vehicle; the net weight is the recorded material load after the vehicle weight is deducted. See our weighbridge ticket examples.
