Ordering Sand and Granite in Lagos: What to Check Before You Buy

A useful construction-material quote needs more than a product name and a price. You also need to know exactly what is being supplied, how the quantity is measured and what the delivery includes.

This guide explains the questions to ask before ordering sand or granite for a Lagos site, and the checks to make when the truck arrives.

1. Confirm the specification before asking for prices

“Sand” and “granite” are broad descriptions. An order should identify the particular material your project requires.

For sand, state whether you are requesting sharp sand, plaster sand or filling sand. For granite, state the required size or grading. If your project documents specify stonebase or stone dust, use that description rather than simply asking for “stone”.

Ask your site engineer or project supervisor to confirm the specification. A supplier needs that information to quote for the correct product; a product name alone does not establish its suitability for your work.

2. Make the quantity and unit clear

Do not assume that “one truck” means the same quantity in every quotation. Ask what quantity the supplier is quoting and whether it is expressed in tonnes, cubic metres or another agreed unit.

Tonnes describe weight, while cubic metres describe volume. They are different measurements. If your material estimate and supplier quotation use different units, ask your project team to reconcile them before ordering.

For an order quoted in tonnes, ask how the delivered weight will be recorded and what documentation is available. Where a weighbridge ticket is part of the agreement, confirm this before loading.

3. Compare the full delivered price

Two quotations may look similar while covering different things. Compare quotes for the same material specification, quantity and delivery address.

Ask whether the amount includes transport to your site and unloading. Confirm any additional charges or conditions before agreeing to the order. A quote for material collected at the source is different from a quote for material delivered to your site.

Also ask how long the quotation remains valid and what needs to be confirmed before delivery is arranged.

4. Discuss material checks before loading

Ask the supplier what checks are carried out before loading and what evidence can be provided. Photos or videos can help document the load, but they do not replace any laboratory testing or acceptance checks required by your project.

If your project requires test results, samples or compliance with a particular specification, raise those requirements before buying. Agree who will review the evidence and approve the material.

5. Prepare the site for the truck

Give the supplier the exact delivery address, a useful landmark and the receiving contact’s phone number. Explain any restrictions that could affect access or unloading.

Before dispatch, confirm the unloading point with your site team. Consider narrow entrances, parked vehicles, overhead obstructions and restrictions on delivery hours. The receiving team and driver should agree on a safe unloading arrangement.

For work beside an active road, discuss how unloading will be coordinated so access can be managed. Do not assume the same arrangement will work for every site.

6. Check the delivery before signing the receipt

Have a designated person receive the material and compare the delivery details with the agreed order.

  • Check the material description against the order.
  • Review the quantity documentation agreed with the supplier.
  • Record the delivery date, vehicle details and unloading location.
  • Take clear photos where appropriate.
  • Raise any visible discrepancy with the supplier promptly and record it on the delivery paperwork where possible.

Keep the quotation, payment record and delivery documentation together. These records make it easier to resolve questions about what was ordered and received.

A simple quote-request checklist

Before contacting a supplier, prepare these details:

  • Material name and required specification.
  • Quantity and measurement unit.
  • Exact site address and landmark.
  • Receiving contact.
  • Site access or unloading restrictions.
  • Any required testing or delivery documentation.
  • Preferred delivery date, subject to confirmation.

A clear request helps you compare quotations fairly and gives the supplier the information needed to plan the delivery.
