Sharp Sand, Plaster Sand or Filling Sand: Which Does Your Project Need?
Published 12 October 2026 · Pamitadz Nigeria Limited
Sharp sand is commonly specified for concrete and some masonry applications; plaster sand is finer material for rendering and finishing; filling sand is used to raise levels and backfill suitable areas. Choose by the job’s specification, not by colour, price or whichever load is available.
Before ordering, ask your engineer or project supervisor to confirm the material, grading and quantity for the actual work. These names are useful starting points, but a name alone does not establish that a load meets your project requirements.
A quick comparison
| Material | Common purpose | Confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp sand | Concrete and specified masonry work | Grading, cleanliness and suitability for the mix |
| Plaster sand | Rendering and wall finishing | Required texture and finish, sample and cleanliness |
| Filling sand | Raising levels and suitable backfilling | Fill specification, volume, placement and compaction plan |
Sharp sand: confirm the mix requirements
Sharp sand is the coarser sand category in our range. If you are ordering for concrete, send the grading and cleanliness requirements from the mix specification. For blockwork or mortar, ask the project team about the required blend; the coarsest sand is not automatically the best choice.
Visible debris or clay lumps deserve attention, but photographs and hand checks cannot establish salt content or laboratory suitability. Agree on sampling and any project-required testing before loading. Read more about sharp sand delivery in Lagos.

Plaster sand: choose for the intended finish
Plaster sand has a finer texture for rendering and finishing. Confirm the finish your team wants and ask about a representative sample before a large order. Replacing it with sharp sand because the price is lower can change the work your team needs to do. The person responsible for the finish should approve any substitution.
See our plaster sand page for supply and quote information.
Filling sand: plan the quantity and placement
For raising site levels, identify the area and depth to be filled, the required fill material and the placement and compaction approach. Have the project team account for the site conditions and any allowance needed. Laterite and sand are not automatically interchangeable; use the material specified for the job.
A tipper is a vehicle, not a fixed measurement. State tonnes or cubic metres clearly and agree the truck capacity and quantity-check method in writing. Read about laterite and filling sand delivery.
